Cloudflare certified partner: choosing between ASDP, agency program, and freelancer

Two professionals at night reviewing a holographic Cloudflare Service Providers comparison panel, with cards for an independent consultant, a generalist agency and a certified partner.

The short answer

There is no single right answer, and anyone who gives you one before asking about your setup is selling something. What it comes down to: how much downtime you can live with, whether you are in a regulated sector, and whether anyone on your team will actually own the Cloudflare account once the project is over.

Below is a comparison of the four realistic options on the criteria that change the outcome, so you can match the option to your situation instead of to a sales pitch.

The four ways to get Cloudflare done

Think of them as a ladder of robustness. We start at the top: each option below gives you fewer guarantees than the one above it, but also costs less.

An Authorised Cloudflare Service Delivery Partner (ASDP). A company accredited by Cloudflare through its partner program to assess, deploy and operate Cloudflare environments. An ASDP has certified engineers, contractual commitments, and a direct escalation channel to Cloudflare. It is built for production work and for running the environment over time, not just standing it up.

A generalist integrator or agency. A company too, so it has the resilience an individual cannot offer: more than one person on the account, documented processes, cover when someone is on leave or leaves for good. The trade-off is depth. Cloudflare is one vendor among many they handle, rarely with Cloudflare accreditation, so the expertise is broad rather than specialist.

An independent individual: consultant or freelancer. One person, hired either for advice (an architecture review, a migration plan, a second opinion) or to execute a bounded task (add a site, configure DNS, set up a WAF rule). The line between "consultant" and "freelancer" is mostly about advice versus hands-on work, and plenty of people do both. Cost-effective and flexible. What you do not get: a second person if they fall ill, an SLA worth the name, or a route into Cloudflare.

Cloudflare directly. You buy a plan and manage everything yourself, with Cloudflare support according to your plan tier. Full control, no intermediary, and full responsibility. Enterprise plans add a named account team and faster support; lower tiers do not.

Agency and specialist are not mutually exclusive

Brixio often acts as the Cloudflare technical layer behind integrators and generalist agencies: they keep the client relationship and the coordination, we take on the Cloudflare work (deployment, WAF, Zero Trust, operations). The agency widens its offer without building an in-house Cloudflare team. For the client, that means choosing an agency does not shut out specialist expertise: it can be there, in the background.

What actually differs

The four options look interchangeable on a landing page. They are not. These are the criteria that change the result in production.

A few points are worth spelling out:

  • Accreditation is verifiable, expertise is claimed. Anyone can write "Cloudflare expert" on a profile, and an agency can list Cloudflare among its logos. ASDP status is audited by Cloudflare and listed in its partner directory. If accreditation matters to you, ask to see it.
  • A company buys you continuity, not necessarily depth. An integrator survives one person leaving, which a freelancer cannot. But if Cloudflare is one line in a long vendor list, the specialist knowledge may not be there when a configuration gets unusual.
  • An SLA is only as good as who stands behind it. What a real SLA commits to is response and remediation time: how fast someone picks up, diagnoses, and fixes what is fixable. One person cannot answer around the clock or get an incident prioritised inside Cloudflare. A partner can commit to those times and escalate through a direct channel.
  • Deploying and operating are different jobs. Most pain in Cloudflare environments comes months after go-live: a rule nobody documented, a certificate that lapsed, a config that drifted. Project-based options hand that back to you.
From experience

A fair share of the environments we are asked to take over come from a previous provider, sometimes a generalist, sometimes a less-certified Cloudflare partner such as an MSP, where the delivery did not match the stakes. Not because those teams lack skill, but because Cloudflare at production scale calls for experts: a configuration that works on day one can still drift, or fall short under real load or an audit, when nobody owns it at that level.

It is the same with any solution: you are always better off having experts run it.

When each option is the right one

This is the part most comparison pages skip, because it does not sell.

  • An independent individual is enough when the work is bounded or advisory: one site, a DNS change, a single WAF rule, or a one-off architecture review for a team that will run the platform itself. No compliance exposure, no need for a second pair of hands at 2am. Paying for a partner here is overkill.
  • A generalist integrator or agency fits when Cloudflare is one piece of a wider stack you already hand to them, and you value a company relationship and continuity over deep Cloudflare specialism. Fine until the configuration gets unusual or the sector gets regulated.
  • Cloudflare directly works when your team has the skills and the time to own the account, and you are comfortable being first responder when something breaks.
  • A partner earns its place when downtime is not an option, when you are in a regulated sector and need an audit trail, when the environment has grown faster than its documentation, or when nobody internally fully owns the Cloudflare account.
Low stakes does not mean no security

Even outside a regulated sector, and even when the stakes look modest, careful work and managed security still pay off. SMEs are in fact the category most hit by ransomware: in France, 48% of the cases handled by the national cyber agency (ANSSI) in 2025, up from 37% the year before. For a small business with no cash buffer to absorb the downtime and the cleanup, a serious attack can be fatal. That is why Brixio also built entry-level support plans and managed services: managed protection sized to the real need, without paying for coverage you do not use.

In a regulated sector, this is not just prudence. Proactive, documented security is a legal obligation, not a best-effort arrangement. In the EU, for example, the NIS2 directive requires organisations in many sectors to put cybersecurity risk-management measures in place and to be able to evidence them.

You have to be able to show an auditor what was configured, by whom, and why. That raises the bar on who you bring in: an accredited partner can produce that evidence, a one-off contractor usually cannot. (Brixio handles NIS2 compliance as part of this.)

Already have an agency? You do not have to choose

Brixio works behind some generalist integrators as their Cloudflare specialist layer, precisely to lift that competence ceiling when a configuration gets unusual or a sector gets regulated. If you already have a partner you trust, keep them: you can bring us in as reinforcement, with everything routed through your existing partner. One relationship to manage, specialist depth when it is needed.

If you recognise yourself in one of the first three, you probably do not need a partner's sales page at all. If it is the last one, the table above is your checklist of what to ask for.

The Zero Trust caveat

One area deserves a separate note: Zero Trust and SASE deployments (Access, Gateway, browser isolation, network segmentation). These touch identity, device posture and network paths at once. A misconfiguration does not just slow a site down, it can open a path that should have stayed closed, or lock out the people who need access.

This is the one place where a generalist integrator or a lone non-specialist carries real risk: breadth does not help when the detail is everything. If your project is Zero Trust, weight accreditation and operational track record more heavily, and ask specifically what the provider has deployed before. We have run these deployments in production, across government, transport and education:

FIELD PROOF

Government asset-valuation platform

A Saudi government valuation platform took its internal apps off the public internet. Cloudflare Tunnel and Zero Trust Access removed the public IP entirely, with no VPN client and no external IDP to run.

How to choose, in practice

Start from your situation, then pick the option, not the reverse.

The first question is the simplest: does the asset make money? The figures are not trivial. In ITIC's 2024 survey of more than 1,000 companies, a single hour of downtime cost over $300,000 for 90% of mid-size and large firms.

  • If downtime costs revenue (an e-commerce site, a SaaS platform) or breaks a customer's service, an unmanaged or one-person setup is a risk you carry yourself. The same goes for any regulated environment.
  • If the asset is low-stakes and unregulated, one person or doing it yourself is likely enough.
  • If an agency already runs a wider stack where Cloudflare is one part, keeping it there is reasonable, until the configuration gets unusual or the sector gets regulated.

Production, regulated, revenue-critical, or owned by nobody: that is where audited accreditation and an escalation path start to matter.

Full disclosure: Brixio is an Authorised Cloudflare Service Delivery Partner, so we sit in that last category by design. It is not the right call for every project, and when another option fits better, the table above says so plainly.

Frequently asked questions

An Authorised Cloudflare Service Delivery Partner: a company audited and accredited by Cloudflare to assess, deploy and operate Cloudflare environments, with a direct escalation channel to Cloudflare.

Not always. For a single site with a simple configuration, the documentation or one freelancer can be enough. A partner matters when there is no room for downtime, when there is real money on the line (an e-commerce site, a SaaS platform), in a regulated environment, or on an account nobody fully owns.

Both are companies, so both give you continuity when one person leaves. The difference is depth and accreditation. An ASDP is audited by Cloudflare, holds contractual SLAs and has a direct escalation channel. For a generalist integrator, Cloudflare is usually one vendor among many, without that accreditation or escalation route.

Not much, structurally. Both are individuals. "Consultant" usually signals advice (architecture, planning, a second opinion), "freelancer" signals hands-on execution of a bounded task, and many people do both. Neither comes with company-level continuity or a Cloudflare escalation path.

Yes, for a small bounded task. For production-grade WAF, Zero Trust or anti-DDoS in a regulated sector, the accreditation, SLA and escalation path usually are not there.

Yes. Brixio acts as the Cloudflare specialist layer behind some generalist integrators. If you already have a partner you trust, you can bring us in as reinforcement on the Cloudflare-specific work, with everything routed through your existing partner so you keep a single relationship to manage.
